Welcome to Casey Key

Casey Key is one of the Gulf Coast's last truly private barrier islands — an eight-mile ribbon of sand off the mainland villages of Nokomis and Osprey, about 15 minutes south of downtown Sarasota and just north of Venice. A single winding, two-lane road runs its length, there are no high-rises and almost no commercial development, and only about 500 people live here year-round — the seclusion that has drawn privacy-seeking residents like bestselling author Stephen King.

Casey Key FAQs

Where is Casey Key?

Casey Key is a barrier island in Sarasota County off the mainland communities of Nokomis and Osprey — about 15 minutes south of downtown Sarasota and just north of Venice. It is reached by the historic Blackburn Point swing bridge to the north or the Albee Road bridge to the south.

How much do Casey Key homes cost?

Recent active listings range from around $510K to nearly $12M. Gulf-front and true beach-to-bay estates with private docks command the highest prices, and the island's limited inventory keeps values strong.

Why is Casey Key so private?

By design — a single two-lane road runs the 8-mile island, there are no high-rises and almost no commercial development, and only about 500 people live here year-round. The historic swing bridge also naturally limits traffic.

Are there condos on Casey Key?

Casey Key is overwhelmingly single-family, with only a handful of small, low-density condo communities. Most of the island is private estates and beach-to-bay homes.

Who lives on Casey Key?

The island's privacy has long attracted notable residents, most famously bestselling author Stephen King. Its quiet, old-Florida character continues to draw buyers seeking seclusion.

About the area

About Casey Key Real Estate

The island was named for Captain John Charles Casey, who helped survey the coast for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey between 1848 and 1851. Pioneer families — the Webbs, Knights and Blackburns — homesteaded here in the late 1800s, farming and fishing along Little Sarasota Bay. Access changed in 1926 with the completion of the historic Blackburn Point swing bridge, a rare surviving example of early-20th-century engineering that still turns to let boats pass and helps keep Casey Key quiet to this day.

Casey Key real estate is almost entirely residential and largely Gulf-to-bay: many properties stretch from the beach across the road to a private dock on Little Sarasota Bay, and prices reflect that rarity — recent listings range from roughly $510K to nearly $12M. Buyers here trade nightlife and shopping for privacy, deep water and some of the most beautiful beaches in Sarasota County. Prefer a livelier island? Compare Siesta Key or the rest of the Sarasota barrier islands — or get an instant valuation if you already own on the key.
